Bear Watching & Wilderness Experience
2 Days / 1 Night
Step into Estonia’s wild landscapes and experience one of Europe’s most unforgettable wildlife encounters — observing brown bears in their natural habitat.
DAY 1
From coast to deep forest
Your journey begins at 09:00 at the top of Viru Street in Tallinn. Within an hour, the city dissolves into forests, shoreline, and quiet villages as we travel into the tranquil beauty of Lahemaa National Park.
Lahemaa National Park
Along the way, we pause at the historic manor estates of Palmse and Sagadi — glimpsing Estonia's layered past — before continuing to the picturesque fishing village of Altja, where traditional coastal life still quietly endures.

Lunch is at a carefully chosen seaside restaurant, known for fresh, seasonal food — if the fishermen have been lucky, expect local catch straight from the Baltic (lunch is not included) . If the weather invites, there's time for a walk along the shore, or even a swim.

Into the bear hide
In the afternoon, we head deeper inland into the vast forests of Alutaguse. A brief stop to pick up any personal snacks or drinks, and then a local guide introduces you to the life and behaviour of bears — what to expect, how to move, how to listen — before leading you quietly through the trees (around 400 metres) to a place very few people ever reach.
Inside, everything is ready for the night ahead:
-
Sleeping bunks with blankets
-
Observation windows
-
Electricity and a water-based toilet
-
A sensitive outdoor microphone — birdsong, elk calls, rustling branches, and sometimes the heavy footfall of a bear approaching
Birdsong. Rustling branches. Distant movement. And sometimes — the unmistakable presence of a bear.
Dinner comes with you and is enjoyed quietly inside the hide — a satisfying picnic-style meal, accompanied by tea, or something a little stronger to sip while waiting for the forest to come alive.
Silence is essential. Bears are highly sensitive to human sound — and this quiet patience is exactly what makes each encounter so powerful.
Once inside, you remain until morning — part of the experience is surrendering to the stillness, the anticipation, the sense of entering another world entirely.
Your bear hide awaits — a secluded log cabin at the edge of a forest clearing, built for stillness, observation, and full immersion in the wild.
Silence is essential. Bears are highly sensitive to human sound — and this quiet patience is exactly what makes each encounter so powerful.

Twilight Whispers, Wild Encounters
As dusk settles over Alutaguse, patience becomes part of the magic.
Estonia is home to approximately 1,000 brown bears, and Alutaguse holds a big part of them.
The first signs may be subtle — a rustle, a shadow — and then, a magnificent brown bear steps into view.
Later, you might spot foxes, raccoon dogs, moose, or even the gleaming eyes of a lynx in the distance.
With an 90%+ sighting success rate in summer, this is one of Europe’s most intimate and thrilling wildlife experiences — and yet, it remains quietly respectful, with no disturbance to the animals.
We typically observe 1-4 different bears over the course of a single night.

Early morning
Often the best time for wildlife — the forest wakes slowly, and the light returns gently through the trees.
Private upgrade
A 2-person luxury hide may be available — ideal for couples or photographers wanting total solitude.

DAY 2
Forest stillness & bog landscapes
You wake in the quiet hush of the Alutaguse wilderness, as the first light filters through the trees — perhaps with the memory of bears seen just hours before. We leave the hide in silence, carrying something hard to put into words.
Slow morning & local flavours
A short drive brings us to a nearby tavern for a warm breakfast and strong coffee — the perfect moment to reflect, share stories, and ease back into the day.
Bogs, forest trails & hidden landscapes
Our journey continues through some of Estonia's most distinctive natural landscapes. We walk the Tudu Lake trail through mixed woodlands and alongside a gently flowing stream — easy, unhurried, no strenuous hiking required. Lunch is in a local tavern (not included ) Then we continue to the mystical Kõnnu bog, where wooden boardwalks lead across open wetlands and a viewing tower offers sweeping views across the surrounding wilderness.
Bogs are a vital part of Estonia's identity — rich in biodiversity, folklore, and a rare kind of silence. Along the way, your guide shares Estonia's living nature traditions: identifying edible wild plants, berries, and remedy herbs still foraged today. If the weather allows, there's a chance to swim in a forest lake before we return to Tallinn at around 17:00.
