Lahemaa National Park Escape — bogs, manors, forest, coastlines and foraging

Full day · From Tallinn · Small group, max 8 guests

Leave the cobblestones behind. Just one hour from Tallinn lies a world shaped by ancient forests, mysterious bogs, elegant manor estates and a coastline that has changed little in centuries.

This is not a bus tour. This is Estonia as it really is — unhurried, wild, and quietly unforgettable.

The Journey

09:00 — Departure from Tallinn We leave the city behind from the top of Viru Street. Within an hour, Tallinn dissolves into forest, shoreline and open sky as we enter Lahemaa — Estonia's oldest and largest national park.

Into the Bog Our first stop is one of Estonia's most iconic landscapes — Viru Bog or Kõnnu Suursoo, depending on the season. Wooden boardwalks lead us across open wetland shaped over thousands of years. The walk is easy and accessible, yet the landscape feels ancient, quiet, and strangely alive.

Along the way, your guide brings the bog to life — how these wetlands formed, why Estonians have always felt a deep connection to them, and what lives beneath the moss and water. Estonia has one of the highest proportions of bog landscape in Europe, and once you walk through one, you begin to understand why.

In summer, the bog offers something unexpected — a chance to swim in the dark, peat-rich water that Estonians have believed in for centuries for its healing properties.

Depending on the season, we may also forage — edible berries, wild herbs, mushrooms, or spruce shoots that Estonians have gathered from forests and meadows for generations. Foraging is not a trend here. It is simply how people have always lived.

Palmse Manor From the wilderness, we step into another world entirely. Palmse is one of Estonia's most beautifully restored Baltic-German manor estates — surrounded by formal gardens, still ponds and centuries of quiet history. Your guide shares the stories of the noble families who shaped this landscape, and the layered history of a country that has passed through many hands.

13:30 — Lunch at Altja Tavern One of the most atmospheric countryside inns in Estonia. Stone walls, wooden beams, and a menu rooted in seasonal Estonian flavours. Lunch is not included — guests order freely from the menu and pay locally. Your guide will help with recommendations.

Altja Coastal Trail After lunch, we follow one of Lahemaa's most beautiful nature paths — through peaceful pine forest, past quiet streams and out along the Baltic coastline. The air changes here. The forest opens to sea views, sandy stretches, and a stillness that is hard to find elsewhere.

Along the trail, we may find signs of beavers — one of Estonia's most remarkable ecosystem engineers — as well as coastal wildlife and the quiet rhythm of a landscape left largely undisturbed.

Altja Fishing Village One of the best-preserved coastal villages in Estonia. Weathered fishermen's cottages, traditional wooden net sheds and a way of life that the modern world has largely passed by. Your guide brings the village's maritime heritage to life — the families who lived from the Baltic Sea, the traditions still quietly held, and the stories carried in the old wood and salt air.

Scenic Coastal Road Stop Käsmu or Võsu, depending on the weather and the mood of the day. Time to breathe, walk, and simply be somewhere beautiful.

18.00 — Return to Tallinn
